Viva Live Oak is a community project created by
residents of Live Oak, an unincorporated neighborhood of Santa Cruz County, California.
It is a PhotoVoice project, which involves community
members taking pictures and writing narratives to go with those pictures. Our photographs speak
to the themes of community pride, historical and ecological preservation, and social justice.
Our intent is to spark dialogue through these photographs and encourage people to effect change
in their communities.
Our slogan,"Life between the S and the C", refers to living in Live Oak,
which is located geographically and culturally between Santa Cruz and Capitola on California's Central coast.
In the past we have exhibited our pictures at the
Live Oak Farmers Market, the Santa Cruz County Building,
and the Live Oak Public Library. In addition
to the exhibitions, we have organized community dialogue sessions around our
themes. We have also hung a large banner featuring our pictures, which was
located on 17th Avenue near Rodriguez, in Live Oak.
PhotoVoice is sponsored by the Community Psychology Research and Action Team at UC Santa Cruz,
the Center for Justice, Tolerance and Community,
Live Oak Family Resource Center
, and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Cruz.
